Social Media For Silver Foxes on Jan. 24th
Seattle Internet Marketing company teaches local senior citizens how to use Facebook & answers their questions about using Social Media to stay in touch with family
January 2, 2012 (Seattle, WA) - On January 24th online marketing company, Bonsai Media Group, will help Seattle seniors reconnect with their families using Social Media at their Social Media for Silver Foxes event taking place at Queen Anne's Bayview Retirement Community.
Seniors are finding themselves increasingly distanced from their families as more people move away from their hometowns in this era of easy travel and global communications. Seniors often miss out on important moments in their children and grandchildren's' lives in a time when people are more likely to document milestones with a Facebook Update or a Tweet than a phone call.
A recent study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, found that retirees who use the Internet regularly are 20% to 28% less likely to be classified as depressed. Seniors are getting the message with 33% of Internet users aged 65 and older using social-networking websites in 2011, compared with 13% in 2009.
Lead by Bonsai founder, Jason Labaw, Social Media for Silver Foxes will teach seniors how to communicate with their families using Facebook and will answer their questions on other platforms such as Skype and Twitter . The team will:
- Help attendees register for Facebook
- Assist in creating Facebook profiles
- Give step-by-step instructions on how to use Facebook
- Offer tips for staying secure online
Participants are even encouraged to bring photographs for the Bonsai team to scan and upload to their new accounts.
"In our business we see just how fast technology changes and effects the way people communicate," Labaw states. "Keeping up can be hard even for pros, so it's very difficult for seniors who aren't interacting with technology everyday. We thought this was a great way to help bridge the technology generation gap and get people closer to their families."
Social Media for Silver Foxes will take place, Thursday January 24th from 2-4pm at Bayview Retirement Community (11 West Aloha - Seattle, WA 98119). It is free and open to the public. For more information and to reserve space at the event call 206-281-5768.
